Drug Development
Biomedical innovation over the last half century has improved health and extended lifespan globally. The molecular understanding of disease, along with sophisticated automation and screening technologies, have ushered in a new era of drug discovery. However, many infectious diseases, including ones that cause profound mortality and morbidity worldwide, still lack effective and safe treatments.
UCSC faculty have been at the forefront in the discovery of natural products to combat a variety of these neglected diseases, including cholera, African River Blindness, and mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
UCSC researchers recently obtained a large federal instrumentation grant to build a state-of-the-art core facility that will greatly accelerate their drug discovery capabilities, allowing them to continue their longstanding efforts to develop new and improved medicines against infectious diseases that threaten human health on a global scale.
