Big Data & Genomics
Global DNA sequencing capacity has more than doubled every six months in the last decade. This genetic information is powering revolutions across many fields. Disease outbreaks can be tracked and responded to in near real-time; for example, global monitoring of SARS-COV2 variants is essential to anticipating changes in infectivity.
Genetic testing is now routinely used to diagnose and customize treatment for many diseases. Sequencing-based assays allow transcriptional profiling of thousands of individual cells simultaneously, allowing unprecedented examination of disease models. These advances depend on new computational methods and storage that are both fast and efficient. Furthermore, DNA databases within the healthcare system have tremendous untapped information that, with the aid of artificial intelligence, is increasingly informing our understanding of health and disease. Researchers at UCSC are working to enable these revolutions, ensuring that they ethically and equitably benefit all people.
